Plane Crash Out My Window - US Airways Flight 1549
Amazing things happen in NYC, as well terrible ones. My wife and were moving into our new apt and we got a first hand view of the US Airways crash right out our window. Our prayers are with the passengers, crew, rescue workers and families of those involved.
The interesting thing was it very easily could have been one of our team members or me on that place, our main office travels constantly from and to north Carolina.
Makes you think about every moment you spend, and life.

A Night Out With Dr. Dolf de Roos
This past weekend I had the pleasure of making a cross country tour of first of the year client meetings and checkups for the new year. The trip basically went from NYC to LA and back again with many stops in between all crammed into 6 days. One of the stops happened to be in Phoenix, AZ which is where the story begins.
After a few meetings in Phoenix, one of my VPs at City Capital and I got picked up by a friend of mines by the name of Dr. Dolf de Roos. As some of you may know Dolf and I are co-producers of the Wealth Summit Live event in Orlando, Fl on January 24-25 2009. Dolf is a world renowned real estate investor, and author of over 11 books on the subject of commercial real estate investing. Right now he is working on digging a 48 acre lake and charging people an insane amount of money to Ski on it. Long story, but will address in another post later. So as you can see we have a lot in common to talk about.
Dolf picked us up around 6 pm that night and the night got wild after that. The first thing was we got into this futuristic car that almost drives itself with radar, has reclining rear seats with massage, and the list goes on and on. Dolf had this great restauraunt he took his two that was on a mountain overlooking the valley, with a view as phenomenal as the food. We had a great conversation at dinner, and then Dolf asked the magic question. What would you guys like to do next? The funny thing is all we could come up with was to go look at the local real estate? Wow in a west coast city, and all we could come up with on a Saturday night was look at Real Estate. The funny thing was that we were all "Seriously Excited" about going to see how local phoenix people live.
So after we left the restauraunt we set out on our adventure looking at everything from castles, to 32,000 square foot homes. Even went by Amare Stoudemire's (NBA Player) to see how he was living. It was like a private version of MTV cribs. We even checked out the Biltmore and semi-crashed a bar mitzvah that must have costs at least $100K for the size venue, people, and all out decor! It's funny how when we show up places the valet people always try to figure out who is that guy, and what do they do! May not seem significant but do keep in mind I am still only 26 and by no means look like an athlete, or a silicon dot comer, and I'm black (however seems being black is in style now these days).
Right now I guess you think I am one boring guy spending a whole night looking at Real Estate, especially in a so called recession. However, I always like to see what a million dollars gets you in various corners of the US. Trust me you can get a lot more real estate in Phoenix than you can in NYC.
While in Phoenix, I also got my first taste of Gelatto and I have been missing out. Gelatto in NYC always looks like some ice pudding, but at this spot in Phoenix they introduced me to the good stuff. Not only is it healthier, but tastes way better.
After that we hit some spots, and even took a look at some commercial facilities. We then called it a night and hit the hotel.
However all of that was just hanging out and killing some time. The one thing I did take away from all that we did is that when you love what you do, it never gets boring or old. Day, or night, warm or cold it never gets old. In order to be very successful in life you need to love what you do and you will always excel at it. When you love something, you will go further for it, do more for it, and take care in your craft. What I learned not only from Dolf, my visit, and those people who lived in homes larger than some peoples aparment buildings is that success comes with a price, but when you love something price doesn't matter.

2009 New Years Evolutions
Let me first start and say happy new year, because this is *THE* year. Why would you say something like that Ephren, in the midst of war, chaos, market turmoil, layoffs, crime etc. Well all those things were the same things we had last year, and the year before that, and the year before that, and so on. The same thing goes for all the weight people planned to lose last year, 2007, 2006 etc. See my point?
However, lets forget about the negative and move on to the positive. It's 2009 and for many it's a new year, and new time. Many people will make many of resolutions and set out on new tracks towards making themselves a better person. In 2009 I wanted to take a different more simple approach to my news years plans. I really am not a fan of resolutions because 9 times out of 10 they are supposed to be things you are doing anyway but simply procrastinating to do. Honestly they just aren't big enough to warrant such fuss.
So I came up with a new years EVOLUTION! How do you like that one? It is actually quite simple. I have been extremely blessed during great times, and not so great times and have had the opportunity to develop relationships with a lot of people in my travels. However, in my quest to save the world and communities all over the US, a few people close to me got left out of that change. So this year I am making a NEW YEARS EVOLUTION !
My NEW Years EVOLUTION is very simple. In 2009 I will go on a quest to drastically change the course of 12 individuals lives. When I say drastic, I'm talking extreme life makeover. How I will do it, I am not exactly sure yet, but figure changing one person's life in a year can be a challenge, but doing one a month is more my speed :) ....
My theory is that by essentially paying it forward big time in 2009 will one day come back my way.
This year I encourage all of us to take some time and make one of our new years Resolutions/Evolutions/Revolutions or whatever you wanna call it a simple one. Make a commitment to help just one person break a negative cycle in their lives or their family lives. I figure if we all do this, then all those other problems going on maybe would go away.
It may sound idealistic but according to history small groups of people with ideals seem to always change the world. As a kid I used to dream about ruling the world and being King. Now that I am grown up, a father, a husband with a different perspective on life. I just simply want to change it for the better, and if I can't change the whole world, then I will settle for changing one life.
I encourage all to do the same ...

What is Seven Pounds and Do I Want to Be "Yes" Man?
This week I had the fortunate opportunity of some down time with the Wife, and we decided to catch up on some new movies. One advantage of living in New York City is that you get to see movies before the rest of the US.
Seven Pounds was the first movie we decided to see. It was at 12:01 AM at night! Man trying to still stay young I guess. Nonetheless I had to KNOW what Seven Pounds was about because the trailer wasn't giving any clues. I guess that was the point to make you wonder, and boy was I wondering. The movie itself is one that you need to be fully AWAKE, and CONSCIOUS to see as it is DEEP from every possible angle of life. This movie will cause you to re-evaluate your life, your relationships, and your purpose here on the planet. When I say this movie will mess with you, I mean you will want to do some self psychiatric re-evaluation when you leave. Everyone I have sent to it so far, has said the same thing. It's a must see for the Christmas movie season.
Next we had the opportunity to see Jim Carey's "YES MAN", and it seems like God was trying to tell me something with all these movies about life, and living. Even though this movie is supposed to be a comedy, it has a very deep meaning underneath and will definitely touch a cord. I would say this one is a sleeper, but after seeing "Seven Pounds" and walking right into "Yes Man", I now feel like conquering the world. I wish I could go more into detail, but I don't want to be a *SPOILER* for everyone who hasn't seen the two movies yet.
What you will learn from each is the value of the things we value the least sometimes, as well a new perspective of what it really means to live. I also think in times like these, we all need to re-evaluate what's really important. Yes, we are in an economic recession, battling two wars, facing threats from terror, escalating crime, deteriorating school systems, along with the moral decay of society but that has been happening since the beginning of time so what's new?
At the end of the day, how will your life impact others, what difference or solution will you provide to the world? Do you live your life to the fullest, or are you living it as if you get a second and third shot at it? Have you imprisioned your dreams with bars of FEAR?
This week over the Holidays ENJOY your family, forget the petty stuff going on around, and value the time you have. As many of us have painfully learned over the last few years, they may not be there next year. Parent's if the kids wanna build a snowman GO OUT THERE and make one with them! My kids still talk about last years snow man and they are only 3 & 4. What sometimes seems trivial or small means the most to our little ones. Something as simple as Christmas tree with ornaments means the world, even though after 20+ years of those things it's old to me. However, to see their eyes light up, and to have them SOOOOOOO excited what brand new to me, and something I will value forever.
Well I guess my point is on this Blog post, is that maybe we should really consider what the Holidays are about and the feeble pleas of commercial retailers to get us to buy. The real sales are after the Holidays anyway. The only thing that never goes on sale is precious memories, experiences, and time. It seems those things are precious, and priceless so we better enjoy them before quanities run out.
